In the world we live in now, it’s so easy to get pulled into different weight loss and fitness programs. It’s also easy to choose the wrong ones for our bodies or get lost in the sea of unrealistic promises and “too good to be true” before and after photos. The problem with all of these ads for weight loss vitamins or plans that claim to give you a perfect body is that we are all built very differently – both inside and out!
The one Fitness approach that never works is assuming that one size fit’s all. Our bodies react to everything differently. One person may be fine in the spring while another suffers terrible allergies. Some people eat whatever they want without issue while others are lactose intolerant. And one person may add a few minutes of cardio to their routine and watch the pounds fly off while someone else does an hour of cardio every day and sees no real difference.
One of our Storm Fitness clients Chrissy recently relayed her story to me about her own fitness troubles after having her first child. She thought she was going to go to a Zumba class to instantly get her pre-pregnancy body back. When that failed, she dramatically changed her diet. She still wasn’t seeing the results she wanted so she did some high intensity interval training and STILL wasn’t seeing major results.
It wasn’t until she started taking Pilates that she finally got the results she was after.
People of every age and gender either struggle or succeed despite using the same programs. It’s a matter of finding what works best for your body. Maybe you think you’ve tried everything but didn’t realize your body was retaining water. Maybe you thought you were eating right by dieting but by doing so you were really missing the nutrients you needed to stay healthy. Or maybe you were doing hours of Zumba every week when what you really needed in your routine was some Pilates to help you tone up.
But how do we know for sure what the problem is and what works for our individual bodies? Is there a short cut to avoid all the hard work we don’t really need? There is! That “short cut” is called a professional. As Chrissy recently expressed to me during one of our sessions, she wished she could take the credit for figuring out that she needed Pilates on her own but it wasn’t until her consult with one of our fitness professionals that she realized she needed a tailored program to get her the body she desired.
Trying a workout plan that does miracles for one person but that does nothing for another feels a lot like trying on a dress that is “one size fits all” but doesn’t come close to fitting. It’s important to understand that it’s not your fault. The person who made that dress didn’t account for the fact that we are all different just like the people who advertise programs to give you the perfect dream body don’t account for that fact as well.
That’s why we need a qualified professional trainer. A trainer can talk to you and get a better understanding of who you are and what you need. Anyone who is truly serious about getting fit should take the short cut and talk to a professional. You will actually save yourself a lot of grief and a lot of money at the end of the day because the professional will be able to get you started in the right direction full steam ahead with some remarkable results to boot!
