What are the benefits or risks of stretching before workouts?
As a Registered Yoga Teacher, I absolutely believe in the benefits of stretching before workouts. Depending on the activities being performed, this may include static or dynamic stretching, and sometimes both. First, I recommend all clients use a foam roller daily for myofascial release to relax muscles, improve circulation, and knead any tension points. This is the way I begin every workout I perform and every client session.
Because many people today have sedentary lifestyles from desk jobs, lengthy commutes, and technology use, myofascial release combined with stretching is critically important to reduce muscle tension, increase flexibility and range of motion, and warm up the body for activity. As with all movement, proper form and technique are important. Because the biggest risk associated with stretching is injury from doing it incorrectly, we focus on teaching our clients proper and effective stretching.
