One of the worst pains that many of us deal with is back pain. Too often, we dismiss this pain as part of the aging process and take inappropriate steps alleviate the discomfort. To start with, there are two things that you can do right now that will start you on the road to recovery. First, drink more water. You should drink 1/2 an ounce of water for every pound you weigh. So if you weigh 170 lbs, then you need 85 oz of water. You will need even more if you are a big coffee drinker or drink a lot of alcohol. Many drinks actually dehydrate you which causes even more back pain! The second easy step is to get up out of your chair more often. Between commuting, sitting at work, surfing the web, watching TV….we all spend way too much time sitting. Walking around or, better yet, stretching for 5 minutes every hour will get you start down on the road to recovery.

With the constant repetitive movements we strain our muscles and joints. It is not reasonable to think that there is an quick fix to undo the lasting effects if these bad habits. Before you go to the doctor, physical therapist or chiropractor, the best next step is to focus on some simple exercises and stretching to get you moving properly. Foam rolling and corrective exercises are a great way to combat these aches and pains.
