Why New Year’s Resolutions Are a Bust
On this last day of the year and as we prepare to turn the page to a fresh new one, I hear many people making their New Year’s resolutions. But I’ve never been a fan of resolutions and here’s why:
1) They’re too absolute
2) You don’t need a new year to change your life, just a new day or even a new hour
3) It’s difficult to make significant personal changes overnight
What I prefer and recommend is setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals because they are very clear and well-defined. S.M.A.R.T. Goals are:
Specific (simple, sensible, significant)
Measurable (meaningful, motivating)
Achievable (agreed, attainable)
Realistic (reasonable, relevant)
You see, life isn’t perfect and neither are we; and if we set ourselves up for total adherence, we will fail. What we want is to position ourselves for long-term, sustainable success. With health and fitness, it truly isn’t about making drastic sweeping changes. It IS about taking small steps forward, creating habits and routines, and then consistently incorporating them into our daily lives.
Statistics vary, but on average, it seems that nearly 70% of people make New Year’s resolutions related to losing weight and other fitness goals, but only 8% stick with them. As a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist, and FAI Functional Aging Specialist, I can promise you that I completely changed my life through health and fitness beginning about ten years ago. But it wasn’t overnight, and it’s been a long journey that I plan to continue because I’m in better shape at 53 than I ever was decades younger.
And, you can be too. By adapting even the tiniest steps little by little, we create the path to being healthier and happier for the long run. So today, don’t make resolutions, and instead set S.M.A.R.T. Goals for yourself and make them happen! If you’ve got a few that you’d like to share with us, we’d love to hear them so please comment.
From all of us on the Storm Fitness Training Team, we wish you a year ahead filled with wonder and the knowledge that you can achieve your best self just by taking action one step at a time. Happy and Healthy 2018!!! 🎉🍾🎈🎊💖🙏😊
