“What’s Your Secret?”
“What’s Your Secret?” by Trainer Bev
We trainers get asked this question all the time, as if somehow the secret to fitness has never been unlocked. Variations include “give me all your tricks,” “what’s the magic formula” and endless others that imply it’s all very mysterious. Well, I’ll tell you the truth, there IS a secret and it comes down to one simple word: CONSISTENCY.
Voila! No magic, just a straightforward, honest answer that makes fitness attainable for everyone. And it all starts with YOU making yourself your own top priority. The more you prioritize and take care of yourself, the more energy you will have for everyone and everything else requiring your attention in the busy lives we lead.
It’s not about a complete, drastic overhaul either…it’s about little steps, taken one at a time, that become habits and make your fitness success sustainable for the long haul. Everyone wants a quick solution, but the truth is that many people have gained and lost the same 20 lbs. (or more) again and again. What you really want is a long-term LIFESTYLE that allows you to reach your goals and, most importantly, to MAINTAIN them. And you want to have fun along the way too!
So how do you start applying this secret? You put consistency into play in all you do:
-Make a SCHEDULE and plan accordingly; while life events can intervene, you will always be busy, you will always have a lengthy “to do” list and you will always have social events to attend. Put your workout schedule on your calendar just like any other meetings and appointments and STICK TO IT.
-Make NUTRITION every bit as important, because it is (and in my mind, it’s the single most important factor). You simply cannot outwork a bad diet. Fuel your body for performance, kick sugar and other bad habits that derail you, and focus on making your body a magnificent machine. And forget about diets – they fail time and time again. You want to eat heartily, with nutrient-rich meals and snacks abundant in lean protein, quality carbohydrates and healthy fats. Put meal planning on your calendar too and spend part of one day getting healthy options ready to eat in combinations all week long, which will ultimately save you time and money while ensuring you dine well.
-Look for a variety of ACTIVITIES that you enjoy and can commit to on a consistent schedule. For me, it’s Strength Training, Boxing and Yoga, an absolute winning combination that I do weekly. For you, it may include these or any number of other pursuits – but pick them and get to ’em. Find trainers that you enjoy working with and that really motivate you to perform. Also include family members and friends in your efforts, or make some new friends as I have with multiple “gym families” that have been my support network as we all encourage one another to crush our goals together.
So there you have the “secret” to fitness success and it’s pretty basic. Quit looking for a “quick fix” and invest in yourself. As you begin to work out consistently, eat well consistently and maintain a positive attitude consistently, the momentum picks up and continues to build. What I want, and I know you want too, is fitness that will lead to a longer, stronger, healthier and happier life. Wishing you success on your journey of becoming your very best YOU!
